The Defensoría de los Habitantes, in collaboration with Costa Rica’s five public universities and the National Council of University Presidents (CONARE), has granted the prestigious Award for Contributions to the Improvement of the Quality of Life 2024 to Randy Siles Leandro in recognition of his outstanding contribution to community development through gastronomy. The award ceremony, held in the Autonomy Plaza Auditorium at the University of Costa Rica, was attended by authorities, nominees, and members of civil society.

Randy Siles, renowned Costa Rican chef, Ambassador of the Esencial Costa Rica brand, and leader of the “Artisans of Gastronomy” initiative, has transformed lives through innovative programs that provide culinary training to at-risk youth. His work has impacted over 200 young people, giving them the opportunity to acquire professional skills that enhance their employment prospects and foster stability in their communities. Additionally, his programs collaborate with local businesses, such as Mariscos Jicaral, creating a significant economic impact and promoting a fair and sustainable supply chain.

The projects driven by Randy Siles aim not only for professional training but also for social inclusion. His work with young people at the Zurquí Juvenile Training Center promotes social reintegration and reduces recidivism by offering second chances. The principles of gender equity, solidarity, and social justice are deeply embedded in each of his programs, fostering inclusive and respectful environments. Autóktono, the platform co-founded by Randy Siles and Carlos Coriano, reinforces this mission by promoting sustainable gastronomy and creating opportunities in vulnerable communities, elevating local culture and supporting functional food producers in Costa Rica.

In 2023, Randy Siles, Culinary Director at Enjoy Hotels, launched the first Sustainable and Healthy Gastronomy course, designed by Autóktono, at the new Culinary Academy of Enjoy Hotels, created to further his mission of integrating sustainable and healthy culinary practices into all of its operations.

This award, which includes the presentation of a statuette designed by sculptor Franklin Zúñiga Jiménez, called “Wounded Nature,” celebrates Randy Siles’ contributions to quality of life in Costa Rica and underscores his commitment to a more just and equitable society.
